Are there any asymmetric encryption systems which are usable by hand? Not worried about them being secure against computational attack, more about being able to work them through easily on paper for humans. Simpler than RSA by hand.

@BretDevereaux @waynejv1973 Stupid question for someone unfamiliar with US academia: why did the number fall so much (as a proximate cause, I mean)? Is it mostly a lack of public funding, or decisions within the universities, or it depends on student enrollment\other metrics?

My goodness. As I've noted before, this is a result of falling hiring, not rising numbers of PhDs. But 10%, just awful. My degree was in 2018 though and this sounds roughly right for my cohort.

FWIW, I'm starting to see more evidence of the 3 types of approach to work from the office or work remote:
I'm definitely observing hybrid picking up a lot, across companies I talk with, and especially some of Big Tech.

It feels to me, we’ll see a polarisation of tech companies in groups of: 1. Hybrid work. 1-3 days in the office/week 2. Office only. Like Twitter, Tesla and others that might follow 3. Full remote. Lots of smaller startups and a few larger companies (Automattic, GitLab etc)

Hearing more tech companies starting to enforce "back to the office." I assume this is because CEOs are less worried about attrition happening because of the cooling job market + headlines on tech layoffs.
