Ministers claimed they didn’t know the damage their changes to business rates would do. That’s not an excuse. If you’re a Minister making a decision on tax, you’re given analysis on what it’ll do. Labour either didn’t listen or didn’t care: full U-turn now.

120,000 job losses in Hospitality alone since the N.I increase. Vast majority are young people who had a weekend job to help support through college or Uni.

Britain is hemorrhaging talent and future tax revenues. The government, having caused it, is standing idly by like a drunk driver unable to focus on the bleeding body on the road.

Last year, the future of British Steel was on the line. Scunthorpe’s steel furnaces were hours away from shutting down. I couldn’t let thousands of people lose their jobs. So we saved British Steel. Time and again, people want to write off Britain’s workers. The Tories did it again and again. My Labour government will never leave workers behind. We’re investing in British steelmaking across our country – so we can make more of our own steel here at home.

This deserves close attention. The UK’s Debt Management Office has an uphill challenge raising enough funds for the Chancellors spending spree. That task just got harder.

Steel is struggling because of ruinous net zero energy policy. Instead of sacking Ed Miliband, the Government is making manufacturers and users foot the bill with tariffs and higher steel prices. It's fantasy economics that will cost us jobs and growth.

A rather better piece of news for the UK labour market. The fastest rate of payroll growth since October 2024 during February (+20,000_. This was of course before events in Iran kicked off...

Rising youth unemployment - now to 14.5% amongst 18 to 24 year olds - is a tragedy. Firms are not hiring as costs rise and confidence falls. Sadly, it could get much worse from the start of April with new red tape employment rules and above-inflation hikes in minimum wages.

Rachel Reeves has had every chance - and she’s blown them all. She could have used this week’s Mais Lecture to change course, but she still doesn’t have a plan for growth. We are being led by amateurs.

750,000 young people are out of work. This is a generational betrayal. Yet the Chancellor is pressing on. Jobs are vanishing, opportunity is drying up, and this Government just doesn't care.

Why don't Labour want us to know the cost of their new red tape? They're terminating the watchdog that checks their own 'workings' on the impact of red tape - so they're now free to mark their own homework. This is terrible news for business. I wrote about this for @CityAM 👇
