A simple transaction between two African countries often has to pass through a third-party currency like the USD, adding extra conversions, costs, and settlement inefficiencies. African trades need payment rails that can move, convert, and settle local currencies easily.

“We hope that, for example, we have a payment card that you can use to pay from naira to Kenyan shillings, to South African rand, without a third currency. And we know you can make it possible” - Taiwo Oyedele, Finance Minister.

Because local rails have not caught up in three areas: - liquidity depth - FX clearing - global payment access. Africa does not just need more fintech apps. We need stronger rails underneath them.
