Then calculate Force Impact: • AA11 momentum: р = 129,000 × 211 = 2.72 × 10° kg•m/s. Favg = 2.72 × 107/0.2 = 1.36 × 108 N (= 13,900 metric tons-force). • UA175 momentum: = 111,000 × 262 = 2.91 × 10° kg-m/s. Favg = 2.91 × 107/0.2 = 1.46 x 108 N ( 14,900 metric tons-force). To arrive at this: Multiply mass by velocity for p, then divide by At. Peak forces were likely 2-5x higher (up to = 5-7 × 10^8 N locally), concentrated on the exterior columns (severing = 35-40 per plane). This equates to the dynamic equivalent of dropping = 14,000 tons from 1 m height, but applied horizontally over milliseconds-enough to slice through the steel perimeter but not the core columns directly.
