🚨YET ANOTHER nasty scam in the site speed optimization world! This one is WAY more complex that your standard grift, so I brought some heavy backup. Join me and @0x15f as we completely destroy an app that is stealing hundreds/thousands a MONTH from whoever downloads it, while also commmmpletely annihilating all of their marketing attribution data, likely costing them tens/hundreds of thousands more. The craziest part.... This is just a warmup for the MASSSSIVE scam we uncovered a few weeks ago and will be releasing a video on in this coming week. That one is going to be W.I.L.D. but this is one is still absolutely insane. A HUGE shoutout to @keshav___anand for helping dive into this one with us behind the scenes. You're a legend! Give the man a follow. Alright, this one is exxxtra long, so I am going to provide a nice TL;DR below for anyone who doesn't want to watch that whole damn video. However, I promise, if you're a @Shopify storeowner or run an agency that hires people who do site speed work for your clients, you'll want to know everything we share here. Let's go! TL;DR This app, hilariously named "Fudge" is installing a very sneaky collection of scripts onto your site that do the following: 1. Manipulate your Google Page Speed performance stats to be artificially WAY higher than they actually are. (Just like the other scams I've covered) and far more evil: 2. Intentionally delaying the load of your tag manager, meta and other data tracking files in order to artificially inflate your attribution metrics. (read that again) Diving in: #1 is the standard fare for all these scammers. Faking high performance numbers on Google's pagespeed test is the common root of these scams... these guys are doing it too... Again, the implications of doing this are dire. Your site is not actually ANY faster, in fact, it's now slower because it has extra (malicious) script to download on top of what was there already. Additionally, Google has now quietly flagged your URL for having scammy script on it and your organic search ranking is most definitely being impacted. There is also a non-zero chance you get delisted entirely from Google as they continue to crack down on this stuff. It's a lose/lose situation here #2 is a whollllle different game. This app is delaying the load of your events pixels by up to 10 seconds in some of our testing! Think about this... Imagine not having any of your clicks, good or bad, not being tracked AT ALL on your site for 3-10 seconds. This essentially means all the data you and your marketing team is getting from your site is completely inaccurate! Why do they do this? Well, think about it this way. You install their app, what are you looking to see beyond everything? You want to see all sales-focused metrics increase, of course. Now imagine if you just didn't count any of the people who bounced off your site within the first 3-10 seconds, AKA the vast majority of people who bounce. Your numbers would look a LOT better immediately, wouldn't they? This is what this app, among others, are doing. And as you see in the video, they are scamming very well established, respected brands with this... it happens to everyone. We even found this scam on a collection of sites owned by a very famous/respected entrepreneur that you almost certainly know. Their collection of brands are valued in the 100's of millions and they are being scammed in this same way and it's costing them an ungodly amount of money and drastically hindering the abilities of their marketing teams. Remember, Meta/Google etc are still charging these guys for those clicks, but they are missing attribution on a HUGE chunk of them because of this script being on their site. I'm sure you can imagine how much that is messing with the marketing team as they scratch their heads, throwing budgets around to different areas in order to try and fix this. Again, if you've worked with a fiverr/upwork dev, a site speed agency or added ANY of these plugins SaaS tools to your site in an attempt to get a faster site, there is a very very high chance some form of this script is running on your site, even if you're not working with them anymore. You think they care enough to delete it all after you fire them? nah... DM me if you think you may have fallen prey to this and we will happily do a safety check for free.
