@BarnettDreyfuss I put up with that shenanigans in my room for one day before resorting to the “physical lockout” tactic: I leave one of them unplugged all the time.

I have two linked projectors because my room is so long. I tried to turn them both off, only #2 turns off. I try to turn off #1 and #2 turns on. I have to wait for it to start up to turn it off. That turns on #1. Turning off #1 turns #2 back on. Lunch is now over.

@RyTriGuy @Andrestrujado @johnmdudley Update: do NOT buy a high pressure sodium bulb with standard light bulb threads and screw it into a standard bulb socket. They require a ballast to work.

@RyTriGuy @Andrestrujado @johnmdudley Anyone tried a high pressure sodium lamp? ($11) Wider range of wavelengths, but considering trying a filter or maybe a prism to separate. And metal halide bulbs ($25) have sharper wavelength spikes, but also have other colors, so filters might work better on that. Suggestions?

Be afraid be very afraid of black flames! In flame tests excited electrons in sodium in table salt emit almost monochromatic yellow at 589 nm. A low pressure sodium lamp also emits the same λ. The flame also absorbs that light & appears black. #spookychemistry 🔥

When I taught, I had two rules in my classroom. 1) Do your best 2) Don’t stop anyone else from learning. Obviously, unpacking them leads to loads more - but it was so simple for the children and very easy to remind them of if they needed it.

@shskaercher I’m still here and many other physics and math Ts stuck around. I spent a large portion of the early days blocking, muting, and “not interested in”-ing stuff, and my feed is pretty close to before. I’m missing the people who left but they scattered to multiple other places.

#iteachphysics if you hear an airplane, and point at the direction that the sound from a plane is coming from, it comes from behind the plane. Without studying (much) airplane identification, can you calculate/estimate height, velocity, size, or other data based on this?

@aserkin Mushrooms are super versatile in different applications. Give them the acid challenge: Citric acid, different types of vinegar, ascorbic acid, or any combo/choice and they have to use it in the food prep and explain why/how it works.

I only have 4 Ss left in my #foodchem class b/c seniors have graduated. Their "final" is done, they want a basket like on Chopped to make foods for the last day of class. So, tweeps - what should I put in it? caveat, I don't have an oven, & I'd prefer vegetarian foods.

@Hookean1 It is a topic for AP Chem. I love this next fact, because it will either be obvious or mind blowing: you can tell this diagram is not water because the solid-liquid interface has a positive slope, not a negative one.

Was chatting with a class about phase diagrams the other day. It is a shame they are not on school Physics courses here.

@IBchemmilam The walls are blast resistant, and an interior room would be a concern for a high O2 environment. The walls of the vessel are carbon steel (in most countries) and need to stay warm(ish) to avoid cracking.

@IBchemmilam Info per a cryo gas expert: the tanks are well enough insulated that sunlight won’t affect, and not worth the cost of building an overhang or finding the shady side of building. Also: those silver things are heat exchangers to turn the LOX into gas and work better in sunlight /1

Wouldn’t it make sense to store liquid oxygen out of direct sunlight? At least a bit of shade would help right?

I have a lot of ? about (un)grading. Let’s do 1 at a time. Ready? 1. My state requires 1200 lab mins to be eligible to take the state exam. How do I motivate Ss to complete labs in a timely manner but not penalize them for lateness/grade them for content knowledge only?
