Today on Volts: a new organization will - at long last! - turn public & advocate attention toward *public utility commissions* & their vital role in the energy transition. Tremendously excited about this one. volts.wtf/p/this-new-org…

When horses were replaced by cars there was a lot of resistance & scaremongering by the incumbent horse industry. Here's an old anti car advert by a horse carriage company. Technology transitions are always characterised by resistance from incumbents who want to keep their assets and continue to gain from them.

Idea: what if the Democrat climate message could be "build baby build" to counter "drill baby drill" since climate change is fundamentally an infrastructure challenge and we need to build solar, wind, batteries + transmission & storage at scale. Build stuff! Jobs! Growth! 😊

@quinnemmett @ESBInitiative out of WRI has a national focus, and they should be able to connect you to local groups. They've got their ear to the ground.

This is a FANTASTIC talk about the power of maps to help communicate problems, and design and implement solutions. Walz's 20 years as a GIS-wielding geography teacher really shines through!
Dr. Dawn Wright + @deepseadawn.bsky.social 🇺🇦@deepseadawn

Did you know? Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, newly-announced running mate of @VP Harris, was the keynote speaker at our @EsriUC just last month??? Catch his super inspiring talk here: mediaspace.esri.com/media/t/1_d2sq… Cc @leahstokes

So this is a little sci-fi, but useful to think about. The Kardashev scale measures "a civilization's level of technological advancement" based on energy use. Humans on Earth are still not quite Type I. Switching to renewables is a great first step. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev…
Eli Dourado@elidourado

I think a lot of conservative energy wonks need to hear this again. Fossil fuels are great mainly as a bootstrapping energy source accessible to low-tech civilizations. No advanced civilization will use fossil fuels to power abundance. There’s not enough of them.

Any energy abundance agenda is inherently low carbon. A Kardashev Type I civilization powered entirely with Earth’s fossil fuel reserves would last only 45 days.

This is an insightful summary of where we are, locally and globally: "Politics is now a battle between those who want to fix what is broken and those who want to keep breaking." theguardian.com/environment/ar…

@SimonMahan FYI, this isn't a Baz Luhrmann quote — it's from Mary Schmich's 1997 column in the Chicago Tribune that Baz turned into a song. (It was also an early viral Internet hoax when Paul Krassner emailed it out as Kurt Vonnegut's MIT commencement speech): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wear_Suns…

Today on Volts: the IRA contains substantial, easily accessible direct-pay tax credits for climate-friendly infrastructure upgrades at public schools -- but most public schools don't know about them. I talk with some folks trying to spread the word. volts.wtf/p/hey-schools-…

"Solar panels. Heat Pumps. Electric buses." Just three of the demands Chicago Teachers Union @CTULocal1 is making for its next contract, because kids can't learn on a boiling planet. This is visionary bargaining for the common good. grist.org/accountability…
