
89% of those aged 66 and over own a property, and the overwhelming majority own outright with no mortgage. 1.7% of those aged 25-34 own their property outright. More than four in ten (42%) British adults under 40 who don't currently own a home have effectively given up on ever owning property — even among those earning over £60,000 a year, 38% say they can't see themselves affording a home in the next decade.
