Git's staging area confused me for days. In music production the work is linear. Produce, save then bounce. Code is parallel: three unrelated changes pile up and you curate them. There's no DAW equivalent, which is exactly why it felt so foreign.

The thing nobody warns you about: you learn something, feel solid, then weeks later it's just gone. Hit a concept this week I thought I'd nailed and it was like starting over. Learning isn't a line going up. It's a sawtooth.

@ravikiran_dev7 I came from music production. My plan was never to out-code AI. It was to understand it well enough to direct it. That's why I'm learning AI engineering, not just coding.

Software Engineers, what’s your backup plan if AI writes better code than you in 2 years?

Something I keep catching myself doing: writing code that works, then immediately saying 'I don't know if this is right.' It runs. The output is correct. And I still don't trust it. Learning to trust my own work is turning out to be its own skill.

@pradiptwt Depends on the task. For coding mentorship and long context reasoning, Claude is noticeably better in my experience. For quick tasks, both work. The "Claude can't do anything different" take usually comes from people using it like ChatGPT.

@kenrt_ Fair, and agreed it should be small projects, that's just how learning works anyway. But even old school style, I'd keep AI for hints. Debugging for hours teaches you a lot. Debugging a typo for hours just teaches you frustration. Save the struggle for the logic.

@mc_code_ Well I'm reffering to the 'old school' programming. Where you program yourself, look at documentations, spend hours debugging, etc. It will take longer but you will learn a lot more. Plus, you'd do this just with small projects.

Trying to learn coding right now feels pointless sometimes. AI can write most of it better than I can. So why even bother? I'm still figuring this out.

Honestly I think going fully without AI is even slower. Quick q though, when you say no AI, do you still use google? Because if you do, it's basically the same thing but slower. AI gives you a hint and you solve it yourself, vs opening 10 tabs and ending up copy pasting code you don't even understand.

@mc_code_ That's intersting, but don't you think it slows you down Especially with large projects, typing everything could be a hassle. I've thought of perhaps making several mini projects without any AI at all. Just documentation and available resources.

@kenrt_ For me personally, the way I learn is I let AI explain and review, but I never let it write the code. I type every line myself. You still move fast but you actually understand what you're building.

@mc_code_ So you'd say, spend some time learning or making a project without any AI assitance? That way you'll learn the fundamentald right.

@korshunovwow @Shivam25mishra Interesting. What do you mean by "liar"? Hallucinations, or confidently wrong reasoning? Genuinely asking because that's the gap I watch most closely.

@mc_code_ @Shivam25mishra Gpt 5.5 > opus 4.8 at reasoning tasks imo What's your tasks that opus is better at? I use it only for code review, visuals and creative writing, everything else - planning, developing, managing my servers, only gpt. Opus 4.7/4.8 is such a liar i can't stand it

Be honest: Imagine GPT-5.6 launches tomorrow , better coding, and solved token problem . what reason would you have to stay with Claude Opus 4.8 ?
