The wash sale rule costs investors $1000's every year. If you sell a stock at a loss and buy it back within 30 days before or after the sale, the IRS disallows that loss. This applies across ALL your accounts. Including IRAs. If you sell at a loss in your brokerage and buy the same stock in your IRA within 30 days, the loss is gone.
