This is too bad and I can't help but relate with it. As a freelancer I watch my stories taken too often by influencers, turned into videos, insta posts without credits, names or any additional fact checks. This happened with my reporting on data centers, just transition, forest

@mknid Keeping aside the blatant plagiarism that was done of your work, this thread is amazing in itself. Shows the sheer effort of what’s involved in journalism. New found appreciation for all of you! My head feels heavy thinking about the effort involved in the actual investigation.

There’s a lot of punditry being thrown at me for calling out Desi Studios and the way they plagiarised my story on Jayanandan. Don’t gatekeep facts. Don’t be a crybaby. Duniya is changing, why don’t you move on. You get the drift. Here's a 🧵useful to anyone who thinks that story, the one Desi Studios lifted sentence by sentence, wrote itself.

@mknid The stealing of your work is totally unethical and unacceptable. No punditry here. This was an extraordinary story. Very good, classic journalism. The Desi Studio folk could have involved you in its retelling in a better way instead of resorting to plagiarism.

@akhilakn90 Thank you, Akhila. Coming from someone who’s disagreed with my work, this means more than easy agreement would.

I have several (and rather severe) disagreements with what Nidheesh . @mknid has written earlier( not this particular work) but nothing takes away that he is a fantastic reporter and his work remains compelling. Do read his work.(2/3)

@seekingsrishti Thanks @seekingsrishti I'm realising there is a real power imbalance too. They seem to be doing it for so long, even getting featured in the same newspapers whose work they lift without any moral qualms.

We are living in a culture that incentivizes and rewards content creators and YouTubers for stealing and plagiarizing stories that journalists have painstakingly reported and written over months. And you ask why journalism is not thriving? Well, here's why:x.com/i/status/20642…

I remember reading this story by @mknid a few years ago and discussing with my friend the next day about the quality of reportage and the captivating flow of the article itself. It is sad and frustrating to see what irksome 'YouTubers' do to top quality journalism and journalists

@mknid I went to block the channel and what do I find? They've lifted the brilliant Rollo Romig's hit story from the @NYTmag (along with my accompanying photos). But of course.

Correction: Raju Narisetti was the founding editor, not Sukumar. I don't know why I wrote Sukumar as the founder-editor instead of ex-Editor, mixed that up. Thanks @saybwala for spotting

Even the outside experts had to be real experts. It is a legend in the Mint newsroom that the founder-editor, Sukumar, once fired a reporter for telling an expert, on the phone, something close to "kuch bhi bata do." Just say anything. A fact was only ever as good as the work standing behind it. Here is how that played out on the Jayanandan story.

A clarification on the two-confirmations bit: what makes sources independent is separate origins who are feeding you info, not separate titles. A CEO and his PR head are one source said twice. A board member with his own knowledge could be a real second.

At Mint, the word "sources" was practically banned. You could not write "a source in the company." You wrote "a board member," or "an official on the leadership team," or "a person privy to the discussions," pinned as close to the actual human as you could manage. Every exclusive needed two independent confirmations. A CEO and a board member from the same company gave you only one, since they answer to the same interest.
