A single dose of a new cancer drug made a brain tumor almost disappear – in just five days. Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital reported “dramatic and rapid” tumor regression in the first patients treated with a next-generation form of CAR T-cell therapy for glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive brain cancers known. The therapy, called CARv3-TEAM-E, was developed to overcome a major hurdle in treating solid tumors: their ability to hide from the immune system. The personalized treatment reprograms a patient’s immune cells to attack the tumor, and in one extraordinary case, nearly eliminated the cancer within just five days. This novel therapy is designed to target multiple features of the tumor at once, a strategy that may help overcome the common challenge of treatment resistance in solid tumors like glioblastoma. Although the tumors eventually returned, the early outcomes were described as unprecedented. One patient saw a 60% reduction in tumor size that lasted for half a year—an impressive result in a cancer known for its aggressiveness. The trial’s success marks a major step forward for immunotherapy in brain cancer and raises new hopes for long-term control or even a cure. Researchers are now working to refine the treatment and extend its effects, with the ultimate goal of turning a once-terminal diagnosis into a survivable condition.

i find it fucking hilarious how Apple "failing" at AI is now the exact reason they're about to win it: - watched everyone else burn $1.4T+ building models... then picked the winner (gemini) to use for... $1B - while everyone fights to grow users, apple flips a switch and 2.5 billion devices get AI siri tmrw. - $150B to splurge on the device / app layer. zero competition (because everyones spent their cash). - while openAI charges $200/mo subscriptions, Apple lets you run models on-device (cheaper, faster, private, personal) - while openAI struggles to build an AI device, Apple just dropped 5 powered by the best AI chips for hand-held devices. they "lost" the model race because they didn't need to win it in the first place greatest to (accidentally) ever do it.

You also are wishful in saying “AI co.s should pay licenses” - they don’t just like the way they steal from Inventors.

What long term good is gained by AI companies having free access to my songs and catalog? Does the world not have enough recordings and songs? Does it cure cancer? You haven’t told me why it’s in anyone’s interest? Yet you seem to be relentlessly advocating for it. Or at least excusing the rapacious behavior. So hence I’m assuming that you have some sort of quasi religious outcome in mind. It feels like eschatology.

@davidclowery I think you argue from a assumptive position: that I am an AI utopian? I am not. My argument is more about mechanism design - power laws are unavoidable, so fix the timing of the engine: AI benefits from the capture of catalogs due to copyrights being long term assets.

Try to stay on topic. That’s not the argument. You’re doing what people do when they can’t admit that they never thought through the 2nd and 3rd order effects of their positions.

@cypherhat @davidclowery To folks like you there should be no property rights for “Labours of the Mind”. But, you cannot admit it’s clear the Founders wanted IP - Art 1 Sec 8. I participated in the Napster case, and, what exactly improved? Property rights & rule of law take care of that.

@cypherhat @davidclowery A nation of laws should have less lawyers? K. And, “property” is a bundle of rights - nothing to do with “tangibility”. Right? That 95-98% of the value of corporations is intangible is not lost on me. But, the question remains, why does society benefit from AI stealing IP?

@davidclowery I am advocating for the reduction in the number of years a copyright can be held so that it reduces the amount of financialization of intellectual "property". I think that the current IP law regime has led to the proliferation of lawyers and accountants rather than musicians.

You're looking at rust. The Australian outback is packed with the same iron that turns Mars red. Cyclone Narelle just ripped it off the ground at 250 km/h and threw it into the sky.
Australian dirt is full of tiny iron minerals. Think rust, ground down to particles hundreds of times thinner than a human hair. When a cyclone lifts billions of them into the air at once, they swallow blue light before it reaches your eyes. Only reds and oranges survive the trip. Same reason sunsets are red. But a sunset is the gentle version. This is what happens when you launch a continent's worth of rust into the atmosphere in one go.
This footage is from Carnarvon and Shark Bay on March 27. Locals said you could feel the grit in your eyes and mouth. Two hours of blood-red sky. No filter.
And then there's Narelle.
This storm formed near the Solomon Islands on March 16 and has traveled over 5,700 km across the entire top of Australia. It made landfall four separate times in three different states. Queensland first, as a Category 5 with 225 km/h winds. Then the Northern Territory. Then Western Australia's Kimberley coast. Then it drifted back out over the Indian Ocean, powered back up to Category 4, and slammed into the Gascoyne coast with 250 km/h gusts. The last Australian cyclone to hit three states was Cyclone Ingrid. In 2005. Twenty-one years ago.
The damage is bad. In Exmouth, the roof of the town's evacuation centre got ripped off while 40 people were huddled inside. Homes flattened. Power and water are cut. Chevron had to shut down Australia's biggest natural gas export plant, which pumps 15.6 million tonnes a year, as well as a second facility. And the Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage site, took a direct hit along its full length. That same reef already lost 60 to 80% of its coral in some stretches after a brutal ocean heatwave last year.
Australia saw this exact same red-sky effect in 2009 when the "Red Dawn" dust storm smothered Sydney. That one swept up 16 million tonnes of outback soil in a plume 3,000 km long and dumped 2.5 million tonnes of it into the Tasman Sea. The iron fertilized the water and plankton levels doubled. Particle counts during Red Dawn hit 15,400. A normal day sits around 20. A bushfire pushes it to maybe 500.
One thing I keep coming back to. Mars has a red sky for the exact same reason. It has iron dust that permanently sits in its thin atmosphere, absorbing blue light. But on Mars at sunset, the blue scatters forward instead of away. So Mars gets blue sunsets. Same iron. Same physics. Completely opposite sky.
