It was my birthday last week, and I was sitting in the breakroom at work when a younger coworker asked what my partner had gotten me. She already had her phone out, completely ready to see a picture of a designer bag, a massive $500 floral arrangement, or a viral-worthy dinner receipt.
I told her the truth: He spent his entire weekend covered in grease, replacing the alternator and brake pads on my car, and then he quietly paid off the remaining balance of my student loan that had been giving me rolling panic attacks for six months.
She gave me this deeply tragic, pitying look. “Oh. Well, that’s practical, I guess,” she said. “But you deserve to be spoiled. You know, the princess treatment. A man who really loves you wants to show you off, not just do chores. That's kind of the bare minimum.”
I just stared at her.
What she didn’t see was that for the last half of the year, I had been losing sleep, my hair was thinning from financial stress, and I was terrified to drive my car on the highway. My partner took his only two days off from his own grueling job, completely wrecked his hands under my hood, and drained his own savings, just to hand me back my peace of mind.
The internet has completely rotted our definition of romance. We have been brainwashed to believe that if a man isn't performing his love for an audience, buying things that look highly aesthetic on a TikTok reel, then he isn't doing enough.
We are out here casually calling a man's literal blood, sweat, and absolute financial sacrifice "the bare minimum" just because it doesn't come in a shiny box with a ribbon.

men need intimacy like women need reassurance. same need, different mechanic. he goes a week untouched and starts acting unhinged; she goes a few days unacknowledged and starts detaching silently. men fall apart without intimacy, women fall apart without consistency. no “gm,” no “home safe?”, no “I got you,” no “we good?”…and you expect softness out of that? be so serious. make her feel wanted and she’ll give her all; make her feel ignored and she’ll disappear like she was never there. reassurance is her pre-game. starve her emotionally and she’ll revoke your whole membership. men want attention, peace, loyalty, touch… but can’t send ONE message? boy, bffr. same need expressed differently. he wants touch, she wants consistency.

I’m a landlord. It’s a tough business. I had a tenant, Mr. Alvarez. Never late on rent for 5 years. Then, the checks stopped. I went to his apartment. He didn’t open the door. I used my key. The apartment was empty. No furniture. Just a mattress on the floor and Mr. Alvarez sitting on it. “I’m sorry,” he said, looking down. “My wife got sick. The medication… I sold everything. I’ll leave today.” I looked at the empty room. I went to my truck. I grabbed my tools. “I’m not kicking you out,” I said. “But I am raising the rent.” He looked terrified. “I’m raising it to $0 for the next six months.” He started to cry. “And,” I added, “I’ve got an extra sofa in storage. And a table. Let’s get this place looking like a home again.” That was three years ago. His wife recovered. He’s back on his feet. He insists on paying me double rent now to "pay back the debt." I put the extra money into a fund for other tenants who struggle. A roof over someone’s head is a business. Keeping a roof over their head when they’re drowning? That’s a duty.

My college roommate didn’t even want kids right away. She got pregnant by accident at 29. After the shock wore off, she started warming up to the idea. She downloaded apps. Measured fruit sizes. Her partner went from nervous to excited in weeks.
At 18 weeks, she was in a minor car accident. Nothing dramatic. Airbags didn’t even deploy. She told the ER she was pregnant. They monitored her for a bit and said everything looked fine. Sent her home with Tylenol and “rest.”
Two days later she felt something was off. Less movement. A strange tightness. She went back. There was no heartbeat.
They told her sometimes trauma just causes these things. Sometimes the placenta detaches later. Unpredictable.
She blamed herself for driving that day.
Her relationship didn’t survive the grief. He said every time he looked at her, he remembered the hospital room. Eventually he left.
Years later, when she requested her ER records for unrelated insurance paperwork, she noticed a line in the initial report: “Recommend 24-hour observation due to abdominal impact.” She’d only been monitored for three.
There was also a note: “Patient reports decreased fetal movement.” That complaint was never charted in discharge instructions. No follow-up call.
It wasn’t just the accident. It was being sent home too soon.
She spent a decade replaying the crash in her head.
Sometimes the loss isn’t destiny.

My girl best friend told her boyfriend something that lowkey changed how I see relationships.
She said, “I don’t want obedience. I want consideration. I shouldn’t have to beg you to think about how your actions affect me.”
She told him, “You’re allowed to have friends. You’re allowed to go out. You’re allowed to live your life. But if you constantly put yourself in situations that you know would hurt me, that’s not freedom. That’s you choosing yourself over us.”
Then she said something that hit:
“If I have to keep explaining why something disrespects me, it’s not confusion. It’s comfort. You’re comfortable knowing I’ll stay.”
And whew.
She wasn’t yelling. She wasn’t threatening to leave. She was calm. Grounded. Clear.
She told him, “I won’t control you. But I will control what I tolerate. And if I start feeling small in a relationship that’s supposed to feel safe, I’ll remove myself. Not to punish you. To protect me.”
That’s what emotional maturity sounds like.
Not “do what I say.”
But “I see the red flag. I told you it’s red. If you keep walking past it, I’m not dragging you back.”

I just saw a TikTok where the bride called off the wedding because there was a tradition that the bride and groom would give each other something meaningful or thoughtful. The bride was gifted a PS5 and a family watch that her father used to wear, and yall won’t believe me what the groom gifted. He literally gifted her with “cleaning supplies” & “diapers”…& then he intentionally spilled alcohol on his color and asked her to clean it. She slapped him & said,“ This isn't how I dreamed to be loved for the rest of my life” & left…… Dear men, if you want to get married, stop humiliating your woman, everything isn’t funny!
