Album of the day. Happy heavenly 84th to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Now, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I really think her 1980 self-titled debut for Arista is the best one she recorded for the label, and possibly her best album of the '80s. Her first release under the direction of music impresario, Clive Davis after a few stumbling years at Atlantic Records, Aretha found the singer reuniting with longtime arranger Arif Mardin (with whom she had some of her greatest artistic triumphs during her Atlantic years) and R&B producer-songwriter Chuck Jackson (who was best known for helming Natalie Cole's early work with partner Marvin Yancy). Together, they provided Franklin an eclectic line-up of glossy soul songs that tiptoe between the retro stylings of her Atlantic period and the contemporary flavors of early '80s boogie and funk. She's in exceptional voice here, belting and riffing through a mix of earnest ballads ("United Together," "Whatever It Is," and "Together Again") and buoyant uptempos ("School Days" and "Love Me Forever.") There's even convincing readings of The Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes" as well as Otis Redding's "Can't Turn Me Loose," both done up in early '80s style. This album also boasts a dream team of renowned session players from the Los Angeles pop scene, including Toto band members, bassist Louis Johnson, Average White Band alum Hamish Stuart, and David Foster. A strong offering that brought Franklin firmly into the '80s while still appealing to her core style of gospel-infused soul and R&B.
