Starbucks UK sales increase but appears to pay no corporation tax. Profits shifted through intragroup transactions to low tax jurisdictions - royalty payments, cost sharing agreements, support fees, interest on intragroup loans. Company accounts opaque. theguardian.com/business/2026/…

One of the best parts of following and learning cricket in the late seventies and eighties were ads like these. We had very few good cricket coaching books, and those that existed most were expensive - Bradman's The Art of Cricket was priced at Rs 60 and Lillee's Art of Fast Bowling at Rs 20, and even the basic MCC Coaching Book set us back by Rs 15. This at a time when a cinema ticket cost Rs 3, a Sportstar was available for Rs 2, and you were lucky if your pocket money for the month went beyond Rs 10 - heck, you were lucky if you HAD pocket money. Videos were rare and non-existent, and coaches were limited and impatient. We even got very few slow motion replays on television - DD in India mostly had normal motion action replays with a 'R' flashing in the top right corner. We used to collect ads like this one, and tiny comic strips that used to come telling us about the sport, because they were so handy and helped us understand and play the game better. In many cases, we scoured foreign magazines for these as they seemed to have more. It was not unusual for friends to put together clippings from different magazines to make one badly arranged, disproportionately pasted scrapbook. They would make people laugh today, but in those days, they were worth their weight in gold. When Xerox machines became available, we began making copies of them and sharing them around - kids whose parents worked in offices with these machines were VIPs, very important photocopiers!! Cricketers talked and taught cricket even in ads in those pre-Bolo Zubaan Kesari days. And well, what a perfect forward defensive stroke from the master himself, the great Geoffrey Boycott. Thank you, Cathay Pacific. #Cricket #GeoffBoycott #CricketCoaching #Nostalgia #Advertisements #Advertising (@g_rajaraman @Raja_Sw @pradeepmagazine @SachinKalbag @VatsMusings @RVarmaMD @anandkumarn @nick_newsum @alawyerwrites @WG_RumblePants @CraigNelsy @nick_newsum )

Eddie Paynter — who averaged 59.23 for England — and who famously discharged himself from hospital to come to England’s rescue during the 4th Bodyline Test. He refused Bill Woodfull's offer of a runner, was still there at the close, and returned to hospital that night. But he batted again the next morning and made 83 to help his team to an unlikely first-innings lead.

At the end of the Second World War, the Allies took on a curious hybrid role in Germany, as occupiers and re-builders. The story of the Soviets in the GDR is particularly complex and full of contradictions. When the Red Army Stayed in ZEITGEIST👇 katjahoyer.uk/p/when-the-red…

@thechelskikid @patmurphybbc I even had the Peter Bonetti goalkeeper’s kit bought by my parents for me at Frank Blunstone’s shop in Battersea. Sadly, I stopped growing at age 13. More positively, I turned into Chopper Harris (I couldn’t be an Osgood!)

I recall interviewing Peter Osgood for my Radio 5 series in 1993, asking him whom did he like among modern players. Instantly he replied ‘Big Eric… Eric Cantona. He’s got the lot as an attacker. Reminds me of myself’. Wasn’t said in a boastful manner. Osgood was good - very good
Pete Crowther@thechelskikid

@patmurphybbc He was a different player when he returned. He had bulked up and was far more physical. As the famous Final demonstrated! 😉

‼️PLEASE RT‼️ @networkrail you really need to do the right thing. This is going to blow up in your faces very rapidly.
Joanne Smith@EnviroconJo

.@networkrail #swifts are officially listed on the UK Red List of #Conservation Concern, due to catastrophic population decline of over 60% in last 25 years. Why is your company contributing to this decline by refusing to unblock nesting sites at Milton Viaduct?

#NetworkRail will you be cruel or be kind? It is so easy to be kind in this situation - you can unblock the homes that 6 swifts are currently flying thousands of miles back to. Please do email CEO Jeremy Westlake: jeremy.westlake@networkrail.co.uk #SaveOurSwifts
