@Hybridathlete Bad technique isn't even really dangerous ... it's mainly just load mismanagement

Deadlifting isn't inherently dangerous. But your ego + your shitty technique is.

@Alan_Couzens Is this a static number? For example, if a person's aerobic threshold is at 50% HRmax, can training push that upwards?

Maximal fat oxidation often peaks near the aerobic threshold, and group averages sit ~70% HRmax - but individual curves vary hugely (some <50% HRmax, some much higher). Only testing tells you where you fit. E.g., for this athlete, at the often-recommended 2 mmol/L, they are generating almost ALL of their energy needs from their limited carbohydrate stores...

Don’t chase VO2max alone. Your health and your capacity for training are more closely linked to your metabolic fitness (fat v carb burn) than they are to your aerobic power. A metabolic test (metabolic cart + lactate + HR) gives you this actionable information - your real fuel mix across intensities, not just a number to boast about on X. A brief 🧵👇
Alan Couzens@Alan_Couzens

The reason you should know your VO2max, ironically, has nothing to do with VO2max. It’s because you should know your metabolic profile: How much fat vs carbohydrate you burn at different intensities 🔥 And that requires a metabolic cart.

@Hybridathlete @stevemagness That was kind of the point of his article ... a lot of research looking at longevity doesn't even measure vo2max, it measures performance.

@stevemagness If we’re talking about running VO2max specifically, aren’t they very closely correlated?

If you are 6’0 with a body fat of 12% and a BMI of 27, you weight 200lbs. The vast majority of men have *no business whatsoever* having their weight begin with a 2.

@NeilShenvi "I want you to learn how to proof-read your papers before relying on ai to do it for you" seems like a perfectly rational argument. Same way you should require people to learn how to do basic math before giving them a calculator.

TBH, I worry that "No AI at all!!!!" policies are going to backfire ***if you don't give your students a rational argument for your stance on AI.*** At some point, they'll just assume you're a Luddite who still uses quills and blotting paper and will ignore you.
Neil Shenvi@NeilShenvi

In particular, if your argument against AI pushes you into a reductio ad absurdum like "spell-checkers are unethical" or "thesauruses are unethical," you need to rethink your objections.

@rckffh @1014Hoff @Predamame I'll concede the 200 with a time like that, still think people underestimate just how fast these elite marathoners are on track work. I'll still take Kipsang on a one off 400m.

@swatters4 @1014Hoff @Predamame Aikines-Aryeetey runs a 20.46 sec 200m ... no way Kipsang does that. And given his 200 time, A-A is probably going to run sub 47 400. Kipsang isn't going to run it that fast.

@BiggestComeback There's research that shows walking greatly decreases all-cause mortality: "walking 2,700 steps per day was associated with a three-fold greater risk of all-cause mortality than walking 16,000 steps per day" strongerbyscience.com/research-spotl…

Over the last several years I’ve run a pretty extensive N=1 experiment on walking. I’ve averaged: • <5k steps/day for months • 7–8k for months • 10k+ for 6+ months • back down <5k/day for months And I’m now pushing toward 11k/day in 2026 (4 million steps). My conclusion: Higher step counts dramatically improve energy and sleep. Not a little. Noticeably. Here’s an interesting note: High levels of walking does NOT reliably lower my body fat levels. If my diet slips, my fat storage goes up… even at high step counts. Which means 2 things can be true at once: • Walking is foundational for health • Diet still drives body fat levels But if you forced me to pick one habit most people should add tomorrow? Walking wins. Low injury risk. Zero skill required. No equipment. The only real cost is time. And there are ways to mitigate that. And after years of testing… and after working with hundreds of patients as a health coach… I’m convinced most people are under-walking by thousands of steps per day.

@inabagyouwillbe @elimcgowan He is quite clearly saying that for the right to achieve it's goals it will require mass bloodshed and violence. You expect us to think that Achord does not want to achieve his political goals?

Do you think it was right for your co-author to call notorious enemy of the church, white surpemacist, and swastika-poster Michael Spangler, a “good man?” Do you think it was right for your co-author to relaunch a podcast with the disgraced headmaster Thomas Achord outed for violent and racist statements, who calls for genocide and who has posted pictures of SS soldiers recently?

@NeilShenvi I know Steven Wolfe doesn't like the identifier of "Christian Nationalist" but unfortunately language and common parlance seem to have other ideas. I'm not sure how to rectify that imprecise label.

“By any objective, scientific standard, blacks are not fully human.” “Adolf Hitler was a Christian prince.” Careful analysis is necessary, but sometimes normies just need to be informed about what prominent Christian Nationalists are saying and endorsing. 1/
