한국 라면의 시작을 도운 일본인 오쿠이 기요스미(奥井清澄) 오쿠이 기요스미는 일본 묘조식품의 사장이었다. 묘조식품은 당시 일본의 대표적인 인스턴트 라면 회사 중 하나였다. 1960년대 초, 한국은 아직 식량난이 심했다. 전쟁 이후 가난이 남아 있었고 많은 사람들이 제대로 된 한 끼를 먹기 어려웠다. 그때 삼양식품 창업자 전중윤은 일본에서 먹어본 인스턴트 라면을 떠올렸다. “이걸 한국 사람들이 먹을 수 있다면 배고픔을 조금이라도 줄일 수 있지 않을까” 그는 일본 라면 회사들을 찾아다녔다. 하지만 대부분 거절했다. 당시 인스턴트 라면 제조기술은 기업의 핵심 비밀이었다. 면을 만드는 기술, 스프 배합, 제조 설비 운용법까지 쉽게 넘겨줄 수 있는 것이 아니었다. 그런데 마지막으로 만난 사람이 묘조식품 사장 오쿠이 기요스미였다. 전중윤이 말했다. “한국 사람들이 배고픔에서 벗어나게 하고 싶다.” 그 말을 들은 오쿠이는 모두의 반대를 무릅쓰고 결정을 내렸다. 한국에 기술을 이전하겠다고. 그것도 단순히 기계만 판 것이 아니었다. 라면 제조 기술과 기업 비밀에 가까운 배합 노하우까지 삼양식품에 전해줬다. 일부 기록에서는 기술 제공은 무상에 가까웠고, 제조기계도 크게 낮춘 조건으로 제공됐다고 전해진다. 그 결과 1963년 한국 최초의 인스턴트 라면 ‘삼양라면’이 탄생했다. 처음엔 낯선 음식이었다. 하지만 시간이 지나며 라면은 한국인의 식탁을 바꿨고, 훗날 한국은 세계적인 라면 소비국이 된다. 한국 라면의 시작에는 삼양식품 전중윤의 집념이 있었고, 그 집념을 믿고 기술을 내어준 일본인 기업가 오쿠이 기요스미의 선택이 있었다. 국적은 일본인이었지만 그날 그의 결정은 한국 사람들의 한 끼를 향해 있었다.
