Jika si mati meninggalkan hutang, ia wajib dilunaskan daripada harta pusakanya sebelum dibahagikan kepada waris.
Aset seperti rumah, tanah atau emas perlu dicairkan untuk membayar hutang.
Jika harta tidak mencukupi, waris tidak wajib membayar dengan harta sendiri. Baki hutang tetap menjadi tanggungan si mati di akhirat.
Namun, sangat digalakkan waris atau pihak lain membantu melunaskannya sebagai ihsan.
