@ProfMakris @WHO This commentary really highlights the lack of expertise in the @WHO expert panels and reeks of old fashioned paternalistic medicine - the “we will tell you what you need” approach rather than listening to people with haemophilia and providers with expertise.

I strongly disagree with this commentary in the journal Blood Transfusion. The authors try to justify the decision of the @WHO to have cryoprecipitate and pathogen reduced cryoprecipitate (rather than FVIII concentrate) for the treatment of #hemophilia in the list of essential medicines. I do not know of ANY hemophilia treater who agrees with the World Health Organisation policy. What they recommend is dangerous for persons with #hemophilia in poor countries. Pathogen reduced cryo is only available in a tiny number of countries (?2). So essentially they are recommending unsafe cryoprecipitate and suggesting these poor countries introduce the technology to pathogen reduce the cryoprecipitate. It is about time that the @WHO includes hemophilia treaters in the "expert panel" who make recommendations for treatment of persons with hemophilia. tinyurl.com/mtuyt5fs

@MarjoleinR I read your story & just wanted to check that your doctors had considered a bleeding disorder like von Willebrand disease & sent testing? A lot of my patients had similar stories, might be alongside adenomyosis. Thanks for highlighting struggles to access care for heavy periods.

“Back when we didn’t have haemophilia treatment, at least we had each other”-what a moving statement from Marko Marinic #WFHCongress2024. Really expresses the vital role of national member organisations and peer support for people with haemophilia @EHC_Haemophilia @wfhemophilia

I wasn't involved in that work from @FIGOHQ but delighted to contribute to their new statement on HMB and the link to iron deficiency - hopefully this will reframe perceptions, please share widely! figo.org/resources/figo…

For anyone interested in women's health, HMB, iron or paediatrics this supplement was a great read. Thanks to @FIGOHQ for supporting awareness of the impact of iron deficiency. This is a global health problem that society and doctors largely ignore. figo.org/news/new-ijgo-…

Just your regular reminder that if an adolescent patient tells you their periods are “fine” it’s a good idea to ask some more questions.

At our October Conference we provided free period products, including Tampax and Always products. This was thanks to @MeaghersPharmcy. We also included a useful infographic from Know Your Flow which includes information about what makes a heavy period. @sortoutbleeding

As a hematologist who cares for "carriers" I often don't get involved until they are pregnant... when they've often spent years with abnormal bleeding that could have been addressed. Getting a diagnosis and looping folks into care early should be a priority!

Heavy periods, also known as heavy menstrual bleeding (#HMB), are a common symptom of a bleeding disorder. If you have any of these signs of HMB, a bleeding disorder might be the reason behind your heavy periods. For more info on #BloodDisorders: bit.ly/3Mg9Sl5.
