@Brian_Kelly19 Most coaches won’t admit that their struggle to embrace the ugly holds them back from unlocking their potential and the potential of their players. Watching a drill/concept NOT work properly leads to it being tossed aside bc “it doesn’t work”. A fear of a growth mindset.

@Brian_Kelly19 “Surrender to the truth that cultivating game skill & IQ can’t be done ‘on air.’ “ In my decade plus of coaching, this single sentence defines my evolution as a TEACHER + it is a direct correlation to my confidence (and my players) and comfort with the “ugly” parts of improving.

Good question. I don’t know that it can be boiled down into 3 specific skill sets, but here are 3 things I’d do if I were interested in moving in this direction: 1) Surrender to the truth that cultivating game skill & IQ can’t be done ‘on air.’ Embrace variability & make everything in your practice plan opposed — even your warm up. You need to go all in. 2) Start by clearly defining your offensive principles within these main buckets: spacing, triggers, reads, shot selection. Constantly vary constraints that reflect and build on these principles. 3) Master the 2 man game. This serves as both a way to create advantages within your offense, but bigger picture it transcends the action itself and cultivates transferable skill, deception, vision, scanning etc… to all other facets of the game.

@Brian_Kelly19 This is spot on. As an OC/HC in DIII in a “less-traditional” location, the conceptual requires more “feel” for the game and nuance. Many players don’t arrive to campus with that. If you assigned your top 3 developmental skill sets to the conceptual approach, what would they be?

Traditional lacrosse offense: Win the race — dodge hard, draw the slide, beat the defense along relatively defined pathways. Conceptual lacrosse offense: Remove the race entirely — ball movement, deception, on & off ball actions, reads over patterns, and unique spacing that prevents the defense from functioning normally.

@BYUCougars + @NDFootball should play each other in their own bowl game and partner with @netflix or @PrimeVideo to stream it live and play it on a day when nobody else is playing. All 👀s on them. I’m sure there is a destination venue that would welcome the revenue! 🤷‍♂️

Has there ever been a finer moment in lacrosse broadcasting? Andy Shay embodies the nose to the grindstone, hard work pays off coaching mindset. He must have been holding so much tension for months if not years. We’re watching a grown man’s brain completely snap - from joy. This is on ESPN, on Memorial Day. Paused at the right moment it looks like Andy and Carc are middle schoolers about to fight in the cafeteria. Paul is trying to make a parallel to the 1800s, and Andy’s brain says “I don’t want to talk about the 1800s. I want to swan dive backwards into a mosh pit.” His attempt to reel back to professionalism with a burst of apologies is equally priceless.

To every coach out there with young kids that are asleep before you get home or asleep when you leave in the morning…it’s really hard. Doing what you love while giving up time with who you love. You’re fighting a battle few understand and even fewer even notice. I see you. 👍

Arrogantly acting like your team is winning, and carrying on like fools spewing nonsense while all of the facts and data show you’re actually getting your ass kicked seems, so unfortunately, very appropriate. 🤦‍♂️ Scoreboard don’t lie. (and quit heckling Rory…he’s too good)

The algorithms (and bots) are winning. The divide grows. The foundation cracks. The chaos spreads. A handful of people. People, and themes, aimed to anger. Their “credibility” solely comes from their number of followers. Think critically, not emotionally, and you’ll see.
