In recent days, there have been many appeals and signals regarding the setup for tomorrow in Moscow in connection with our Ukrainian long-range sanctions. The principle of symmetry in our actions is well known and has been clearly communicated to the Russian side. An additional argument for Ukraine in determining our position has always been the resolution of one of the key humanitarian issues of this war – namely, the release of prisoners of war. Red Square is less important to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners who can be brought home. That is why today, within the framework of the negotiating process mediated by the American side, we received Russia’s agreement to conduct a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. A ceasefire regime must also be established on May 9, 10, and 11. Ukraine is consistently working to bring its people home from Russian captivity. I have instructed our team to promptly prepare everything necessary for the exchange. I thank the President of the United States and his team for their productive diplomatic involvement. We expect the United States to ensure that the Russian side fulfills these agreements. Glory to Ukraine!

It’s insane. Putin has refused the 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange. This prisoner exchange was a condition for the ceasefire—and, consequently, for Ukraine’s agreement not to attack the parade in Moscow. Trump, too, announced on Truth Social: a ceasefire plus an exchange of 1,000 prisoners on each side. Putin—that piece of shit in human form—has once again lied to the entire world.

Today is Europe Day. And Ukraine is marking it not formally or through sloganeering, but fully aware that we are already an inseparable part of the European family. We are defending Ukraine, our independence, our future – and in doing so, we in Ukraine are defending our Europe. A Europe of which Ukraine has been and will remain a part. From the first days of the full-scale war until today, Europe has stood with Ukraine. And this is not charity – it is a choice made by Europeans: to stand on the same side as the brave and the strong – the Ukrainians who are fighting today for peace and true protection against tyranny, not only for themselves, but for the entire continent. And we will inevitably defend our state, our people, and our right to freely choose our future – a future in Europe. Glory to Ukraine!

Kyiv drew its own long-range map — and threw it on the table. A great achievement for Ukraine. A lesson for others. For years, Ukraine asked its partners for long-range weapons to strike deep inside Russia. Guided by escalation concerns, some refused outright (Germany and Taurus); some provided them only in very limited quantities and long barred strikes against targets inside Russia (the US and ATACMS); while others agreed but supplied them in limited batches and imposed restrictions on their employment (the UK with Storm Shadow and France with SCALP). It was a hard fight with friends. Meanwhile, Ukraine did not sit still. It spent these years developing its own capabilities. Today, Kyiv produces enough long-range drones and missiles of sufficient quality to strike Russia regularly and deep behind the front lines. This is not a turning point in the war. But it is a qualitatively new instrument of pressure on Putin at a time when Trump is unwilling to bear down on him and Europeans lack the ability to do so. Most importantly, it is a powerful example of how a nation builds its own capabilities and reduces critical dependence on partners.

Today, I met with warriors of the 31st Separate Mechanized Brigade named after General-Khorunzhyi Leonid Stupnytskyi, which is holding the line in the Oleksandrivskyi sector. I received a report from Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on the situation at the front. Despite the announced ceasefire, the enemy has not reduced the intensity of its assaults. There was also a detailed report from the brigade commander on the operational situation in the defense area of the 31st Separate Mechanized Brigade. Together with battalion and company commanders, we discussed current issues: the specifics of foreign nationals’ service in the brigade, the development of UGVs, and support for innovation. I presented our defenders with the Orders of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III class, and the Orders “For Courage,” II and III class. Thank you for your service, for your resilience, and for defending Ukraine and our sovereignty.
