Kalenjin is slipping away in my family and many others. that's why i'm spending most of my weekends going forward trying to change that starting with my own family. am learning on the go using LLMs, youtube, and other resources to close the gap. so, in the same effort, this past weekend i participated in @huggingface's #BuildSmall hackathon and built a simple @Gradio app: "Say It Back in Kalenjin", say a word in English, hear it spoken back in Kalenjin. the app runs on tiny models: Whisper 74M for speech, NLLB 600M for translation, and Cheps (a 3B Kalenjin voice I fine-tuned). all under 4B parameters. i used @modal for fine-tuning and inference. link to app in comments. there's a huge gap to fill for low-resource languages across the world and i encourage everyone, especially those that speak the low-resource languages, to find way to contribute from doing the fine-tuning, dataset curation, or validation.
