I am currently on a train to Kings Cross from the North. Travelling the exact route of the train that was attacked. It’s extra busy as many of us changed our tickets from yesterday (us included). I note talk of ‘increased police presence’, but I’m yet to see any. I’m sitting here watching passengers come through the door, as they do, from the loo, or the buffet or wherever. There is a split second between the door opening & that person reaching you. You’re wedged in with armrests & bags etc. Literally a sitting duck, with barely no way of defending yourself. Stats will say that attacks are rare & thankfully they are, but the damage is done. For many (including me), things have changed & there will now a behavioural shift. The train is a place of higher-alert now, as opposed to a method that ‘took the strain’. I will choose seats in the middle of a carriage, not by the door as I am right now. I immediately made mental note of where the emergency alarm is etc & I am more mindful of others around me. I will probably decide to drive instead. We shouldn’t have to live like this, in a state of high alert - The job of the government is to keep us safe. Yet time & time again we are left unsafe and that old saying “lessons will be learnt” will be uttered, while you guessed it, nothing changes. Inch by inch, life is becoming unrecognisable from the way it used to be. My thoughts are with everyone who was on that train, especially those injured. I hope they make a full recovery.
