One of the hardest things about living in Finland is the dark. The lack of sunlight is unbearable if you allow yourself to think about it for too long. Yet, one of the best things about living here is when the sun comes back again. It feels lovely enough to make you think the months of darkness were worth it. It’s messed up.

We are witnessing the arrival of new world power, a new military force and Europe's chief War Democracy - Ukraine. Great powers in the future will need both heavy metal and aircraft carriers but also nimble cheap fast drone and anti drone technology. This is a story of Comfort Democracies, Legacy Powers and War Democracies. Ukraine is now the expert on the latter: UAE, Germany, Saudi Arabia, US, Poland all are turning to Ukraine. As will Britain and France. The future paradigm in Europe will be the Comfort Democracies - the imperial Legacy Powers - Britain and France contributing their nuclear protection; a newly armed Germany creating a new hi tech command; Poland already a formidable military presence - in the spirit of Jan Sobieski; and Ukraine, massive standing army and state of the art tech warfare. A European miitary bloc with potential to stand alone.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

I have proof that the evolution of security can be fast – and cheaper than old defense systems. This is an iPad with software that lets us control our security in real time. It’s true. We have these iPads – I have one, my Prime Minister has one, our Minister of Defense, and our top military commanders – they have it. It lets us see the front line in Ukraine, and even every enemy killed – with video proof. Right now, 90% of Russian losses on the front are caused by our drones. That’s why it’s so important to know who has the advantage in drones – and to be fast and strong in defending against them. The iPad also shows every strike in our skies, our sea area, and our long-range strikes against Russia. It gives us real-time control over people’s safety, and our infrastructure and energy sector. And I believe the evolution of security will make it possible for every leader, every defense minister – and even ordinary people – to have tools like this, and with them, a high level of protection of life. Leaders and ministers work for people. And if the leaders have power, it is only because people trust them with their security. With tools like this, people will not only trust – they will be able to see for themselves what is being done for their security. In real time. From my address to the Parliament of the United Kingdom (3/7)

I’m deeply troubled by the news of the execution of a Swedish citizen in Iran. Finland categorically rejects the imposition of the death penalty under any and all circumstances. It is the responsibility of Iran to ensure that the rights of the people are respected, including the right to a fair trial.

An old joke, newly relevant: A Finn and a Russian are fishing on opposite sides of a river along the border between their countries. The Finn pulls fish after fish out of the water, to the Russian's growing frustration. Finally, the Russian can't bear it any more and bursts out: "How come you're getting all the fish?" The Finn replies calmly: "It's because the fish on your side are too afraid to open their mouths."

African states became independent in the post-1945 order, and they've known no other system. It's now broken. The challenge of how to define and defend its people and core interests is existential because Africa was colonized in a world very much like the one emerging in 2026
