How on earth does Sydney have so many sites with #RAT available and Melbourne none? Is it that #Domicron ordered more tests that @DanielAndrewsMP or is it #PMforSydney diverting federal supplies there?

@RobGMacfarlane @Jamie_Woodward_ The best thing about it - the absolute best - is that as a Brit, I have been able to say to every German I work with “I bet you I know a German word that you don’t”. Without fail they accept the challenge, and without fail have never heard of Bärenschliffe. It’s brilliant.
English

@RobGMacfarlane @Jamie_Woodward_ Yes!! I found this word in a pocket German-English dictionary I used to use for “German word of the Day” with a German team member (in Australia, obviously) at work a few years ago.

@JimMFelton Well if it only cost £400M a month there’s no problem - we saved $350M a week since Brexit, so that can pay for it… 🤦♂️

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty Different people will have quite different views on where the “right” cost:benefit ratio lies. Personally I disagree that govt response to C19 is anywhere near as dangerous as the virus. I’m also aware that everyone’s situation is different in terms of the cost of lockdown etc
English

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty Especially when there is an option to allow populations to achieve immunity with a waaaaay lower chance of dying (as a ballpark figure the chance of dying from Covid vs dying from vaccination is around 1000-fold)
English

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty Personally I wouldn’t be comfortable with the suggestion of “naturally building immunity through exposure” because if we did that, it would trash healthcare systems and the death toll would be waaaay higher
English

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty As to whether we as a society should try to minimise the number of deaths and what it costs to achieve that in terms of restrictions, people will naturally have a different cost/benefit ratio they will accept
English

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty No, those are the deaths caused as a result of a novel pathogen meeting the global population’s immune system. Yes lots of people survived and now have some level of immunity vs Covid, but that came at the cost of all those lives.
English

@NotoriousB_I_T @Lauranthlel @avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @ProfPCDoherty That may be the case, but they would have to be underreported by a factor of 1000-fold in order for the rate of deaths per vaccination to match the rate of deaths per Covid case. That would mean 105M cases in total which is 4x the total population
English

@tmurrayrust @Lauranthlel @avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @ProfPCDoherty I think these numbers include early last that outbreak when testing wasn’t always available. Anyway, you might find this useful too qcovid.org/Calculation
English

@avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @NotoriousB_I_T @ProfPCDoherty There are around 4.5M reasons not to do it this way
English

@NotoriousB_I_T @Lauranthlel @avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @ProfPCDoherty Obvious caveat: the above stats are not age-adjusted. But it’s clear that while last year Covid was a disease of the elderly, this year with the Delta strain it’s hitting younger people much more often, and especially the unvaccinated young.
English

@Lauranthlel @avery_newcomb @dealtry13 @ProfPCDoherty You could just as easily make a similar site for vaccine injuries. It’s true, young healthy people can die from covid. But look at the numbers and you see that it is incredibly rare.
