@OftCorrect @TaupeAvenger the supermarket is the core need. restaurants bookstores and libraries aren’t necessary for survival. it’s the best possible example because urbanism isn’t an aesthetic movement, it’s a method of efficiency to produce an equitable society

@TaupeAvenger Why do so many urbanists try to sell the benefits of walkability with the worst possible example – the supermarket? Lots of people would love to be able to walk to restaurants, bookstores, libraries, etc. But supermarkets? To carry back 40 pounds of groceries?

Random urban planning thought. It takes 3000-6000 people to support a supermarket, so if you want people to be able to walk to the store you need to have 1500 homes in about a 1/4 mile circle. That’s 3000 homes in 125 acres or 12 homes/gross acre.
