A recent In Dialogue event brought together leading voices to discuss the importance of academic freedom and open inquiry in today’s climate. The conversation featured Jay Bhattacharya, Director of National Institutes of Health, Neeraj Sood, USC Price Professor, with opening remarks from Andrew Guzman, and explored how universities can foster spaces for meaningful, sometimes difficult, conversations. Together, they highlighted the role of higher education in shaping informed, open discourse. “The goal of this project is to actually live academic freedom and open discourse and have those tough conversations. Faculty at USC or students and staff at USC feel comfortable having those conversations,” said Sood. “It’s vitally important for the future of this country and for the future of the world that U.S. universities embrace academic freedom as a fundamental standard,” said Bhattacharya.
