@jabberworks Don't know if I'm the exception but I preferred real-life stories to fantasy in general and was very much NOT top of the tree in school... Partly I think reading about other kids in similar situations was a way of working out how to deal with my own feelings and experiences 🙃

I have a theory that children and teens who are on top, respected and admired by their peers, prefer books reflecting their own lives and school days. The other ones can't wait to leave, and so they love reading books about other places, involving grownup conversations.

Same: the *last* thing I wanted as a child and teenager were books that reflected my own life, I wanted to travel, and escape to somewhere more interesting, with people who had larger interests than our petty school squabbles.

@StrayCurrents Yes, same here. I was quite precocious in my reading choices, but adventure stories, ghost stories & detective stories (Sherlock Holmes especially) were all in the mix. What I most certainly didn’t want then was fiction that reflected my own life. Can think of nothing more dreary
