@AVARY Escape from LA doesn't fall apart as quickly. There's hope at every turn that this could all be ok. I've also referenced the free throw scene as a serious wtf moment for years now, laugh every time I watch it.

@AVARY I’d see Escape From L.A. again. It was goofy but fun. Ghosts of Mars was like a bad fever dream. I’d probably pay to not see it.

@AVARY EFLA is Carpenter's Gremlins 2. It's not as good as Gremlins 2, but it's his Gremlins 2.

@AVARY Mars was the movie that taught me not all films are well made or competently executed. It's frustrating, ugly, incomplete and fails to execute even its most basic effects effectively. Feels like a movie that was made in stops and starts like they kept getting the funding pulled

@AVARY I do enjoy Ghosts of Mars but I feel like it was only a shell of what it could have been. Imagine if early or mid-80s Carpenter had been able to direct the same film concept.

@AVARY I chose ghost to Mars because it stands alone against the original Escape masterpiece. I have no reference with Ghost of Mars and frankly I really enjoy it.

@AVARY Escape from LA because it has a sense of humor and Snake is the man, love the basketball scene, Steve buscemi shows up, shark surfing, Pam Grier as a Tranny. I also loved the soundtrack

@AVARY Escape from LA was initially disappointing - especially when compared to Escape from NY, but in reality it was a comedy/satire, so should not be compared to NY. It was its own thing, and got better over time for me.

@AVARY They are both on the same level IMO but if pressed for a reason why Escape from L.A. is the better film, it is because Snake Plissken is the more interesting lead and we've already shared the history of Escape from New York with him. Both are 7/10 movies IMO.

@AVARY EFLA, but the bar is low here. Ghost From Mars feels like one of those films the budget ran out and they just shut down the cameras one day

@AVARY Only because there’s a spark of wit to L.A. That said, it’s by far the more disappointing of the two. Carpenter is my favourite director, but these two (surpassed only by the truly execrable Village of the Damned) are his worst.

I just saw Escape From LA for the first time. I always heard about how bad it was so I never watched it. But movies have gotten so bad today that LA actually has a fun charm to it. Movies today just don't feel like movies anymore, and I don't think my generation is even equipped to try and make them. But Escape from LA feels like a real movie, even if it's a silly one. Is Ghosts of Mars enjoyable? I've never seen it for the same reason. It sounds a lot like Doom.

Escape from LA, easily! I've never understood why people took that film so seriously. It was obvious to me even as a 16 year old when I went to see it, that it was meant to be a satire. John was having a ball poking fun at both LA phonies and unnecessary sequels. Also, it has one of the most magnificently nihilistic finales I've ever seen. I adored it then and still do! Fuck all of the haters!

@AVARY There are things I really don't like about Escape From LA, but it's actually a solidly directed film from Carpenter and a great cast. Next to Vampires, it feels like one of the last times he actually liked directing. GOM felt like too many people had a say in it.

they're his two worst, by far. if i had to watch one again, i'd rather it be Ghosts, just because it doesn't make me depressed by comparing it to a way better earlier film with the same characters. IMO once he switched to working with Gary B. Kibbe as his cinematographer, all his projects all lost a few points that they shouldn't have. His camera direction and lighting is very sterile and bland. The erlier DPs he worked with were MUCH more creative with lenses, and light/shadow. just more artful in general and helped add shine to enhance everything Carpenter did, where the other dulled it all.

@AVARY Escape from LA by a country mile. It’s got terrible cgi, out of the blue cameos and the story is simple but It’s Kurt Russell as snake Plisken that you can watch all day, every day. A great character and actor can help you lose the focus of a shitty script.

@AVARY This is a tough one because I really like them both, and consider them underrated... Going with Ghosts of Mars because of the performances by Ice Cube, and a young Jason Statham.
