With the Best Ranger Competition in full swing this weekend, here is a look back at 2007 when CSM Doug Greenway (at the age of 47) and his son SSG Brandon Greenway became the first father and son team to finish the competition. CSM Greenway was serving as the Infantry School CSM at the time and his retirement ceremony was a few weeks after the competition. Doug (I can call him that now) was my Battalion CSM when I went to the sergeant promotion board which was the same time frame that we first started deploying to combat in 2002. His lessons and insights have stuck with me throughout my career.
