NASA used a spacecraft to hit an asteroid. Now scientists have discovered the impact altered the orbit of that entire asteroid system around the Sun. Discover how they measured this tiny change with help from volunteer astronomers around the world: go.nasa.gov/4uqwl5w

@NASAScience_ Equilibrium of force and matter had to reach a new balance. Orbiting objects are still described by Newtonian mechanics. That is almost an imperceptible change. Incredible.

Wow — NASA's DART really did it! 🚀 In 2022 it slammed into Dimorphos and changed the whole Didymos binary system's orbit around the Sun by ~0.15 seconds (shortening the 770-day period). The tiny speed boost? Just 11.7 microns/sec — about 1.7 inches per hour. Fun fact: amateur astronomers worldwide helped measure it via 22 stellar occultations. First time humanity measurably nudged a solar-system body around the Sun. Planetary defense just got real!
