@ibuildthecloud I’m not sure what is ridiculous here? A private company taking a stance based on its principles? Principles that arguably are pretty American

Because the principals are fake and it's not actually helping. The DoD is bound by law. The end result is that OpenAI can effectively charge more due to lack of competition. The tax payer is going to pay for this. I know and have worked with a lot of people in defense and the vast majority of them are great people who really care about this country (you have to because the job is hard) and I want those people to have the best technology. People who take these stances demonstrate ignorance to how things actually work and are typically doing it out of their own pride or ego. The defense department has been screwed by tech company whims in the past. It doesn't make sense for them to allow themselves to be put in that position again where they have to bend to arbitrary conditions. The condition of being bound by law is sufficient. There are a lot of resources at stake and it is very difficult to do things in the government sector. You need a higher degree of confidence you can proceed forward. It's not that the gov wants to violate the demands of Anthropic, it's that they cant sign a deal with such conditions, it just derails the process, and it shows a bad business partnership. If you have a negative view of the DoD you will feel differently, but go talk to those people. Understand how they think. Does your job involve the safety of millions of people? Do you have to deal with very tough life and death situations? No. Clearly Anthropic can choose to just not do business with the gov, but I really don't want OpenAI to have a monopoly there. That's how you get real corruption. You need healthy competition. Again, I want our country to have the best tech. As Americans we have a very false sense of security because we've been historically protected by the ocean, but that's changing. The tech is making it very real that a foreign nation with the resources can attack us without the need for nuclear. And AI enables that. AI is a real national threat.

@cloudmarooned @ibuildthecloud If their CEO really had principles he would not be in a business of creating AI that can potentially be used for these purposes. But he did because it made him a lot of money.
