Researchers tracked 10,775 people for 8 years. Those eating the most ultra-processed food (chips, fast food, packaged snacks, sugary drinks) declined cognitively 28% faster than those eating the least. The trigger: 400 calories of processed food a day in a typical 2,000-calorie diet. A small McDonald's fries and cheeseburger alone is 530. Executive function is the brain's ability to plan, focus, and hold several things in mind at once. It's the first to go. People above that 400-calorie mark showed a 25% faster decline in this function, on top of the 28% overall drop. The mechanism runs through your gut. About 90% of the body's serotonin is made in the gut lining, which tells you how closely the gut and brain talk to each other. Ultra-processed food throws off the gut bacteria that keep that lining intact. When those bacteria are disrupted, the wall between your gut and your bloodstream starts to weaken. Molecules that normally stay inside the digestive system get into the blood, travel to the brain, and set off an inflammatory reaction. The main target is the hippocampus, the part of the brain that turns daily experiences into long-term memories and the first area to break down in Alzheimer's disease. A UK Biobank study of 72,083 people found that each 10% increase in ultra-processed food as a share of your diet raised dementia risk by 25%. In the same dataset, replacing 10% of those foods with whole foods cut the risk by 19%. The 28% cognitive decline figure reflects 8 years of eating patterns, not a single bad meal. Adults in the US get 53% of their calories from ultra-processed food, per CDC data from 2021 to 2023. For children under 18, the figure is 62%.

The 1st large scale X study on stock market net worth has finished! From the 6000+ responses of those active on X finance, here's the results: 5.8% - $10M+ 15% - $1m - $10M 35.9% - $100k - $1M 43.3% - under $100k This is probably more representative of active followers. Where 20.8 out of every 100 people have over $1,000,000+. And 5.8 out of 100 have over $10,000,000. And 43.3% of the population are probably happier in life than the rest. Was just curious, fascinating figures. Definitely not representative of the total population, but just those active on Finance X.

I'm actually curious about the wealth distribution on finance X (this is anonymous). I don't think there's been any studies before.

Every workout doses your brain with chemicals that bind to the same receptors as morphine. Miss 2 days and your brain starts withdrawing. Your muscles won't change for at least 2 weeks. Spent some time in the research while this was blowing up. A controlled study in 2002 took 60 club-level runners and had half deliberately skip one training session. Within 24 hours, the exercise-deprived group showed measurable increases in tension, anger, fatigue, confusion, and low mood compared to those who kept going. Their resting heart rate spiked too. One missed session. One day. When you train, your brain releases endorphins (natural painkillers that bind to those same opioid receptors), dopamine (your reward signal), serotonin (your mood stabilizer), and BDNF (a protein that builds new brain cells and sharpens thinking) all at once. Regular exercisers develop higher resting levels of all four. When exercise stops, your brain notices the deficit across all of them within hours. What you're feeling is chemical withdrawal, not fitness loss. The detraining research makes the gap clear. Meaningful muscle loss takes 2-3 weeks to begin, and strength holds for roughly the same window. Researchers tracking adolescent athletes in 2020 found no significant muscle loss after three full weeks off. The "chopped" feeling has no basis in your physiology at day two. Your brain hits the chemical drop within 24-36 hours. Your body won't show real physical decline for 10-21 days. You feel broken because your brain's chemistry shifted overnight, not because anything in your muscle tissue changed. Exercise addiction researchers use the same language here as they do for gambling or substance withdrawal: tolerance, cravings, and mood crashes when prevented. About 3% of regular exercisers and up to 9% of competitive athletes meet the clinical criteria for exercise dependence. Most of us just feel a weaker version of the same thing. Two days off doesn't touch your fitness. Your brain just forgot how to feel normal without its regular dose.
