Gabriel should have been sent off for violent conduct during Arsenalโs loss to Manchester City in April, the Premier Leagueโs key match incidents panel has found.
In the 82nd minute, with the league leaders chasing the game, the defender was pushed by Erling Haaland and the pair had a head-to-head altercation. As they parted, Gabriel appeared to push the striker with his head.
Referee Anthony Taylor gave each player a yellow card following the incident, and video assistant referee (VAR) John Brooks did not intervene.
The Premier Leagueโs KMI panel is an independent body introduced in the 2022-23 season that reviews critical match incidents in the refereeโs jurisdiction.
The panel ruled by a majority of 3:2 that Gabrielโs actions warranted a red card for violent conduct, due to his extra head movement, according to sources with knowledge of the outcome.

Thatโs gotta go down in the Peter Hall of Fame.

This infuriates me. No true football fan should be laughing at Man City empty seats. Not many people can afford three trips to Wembley in seven weeks. Those who donโt understand that need to have a long hard look at themselves. #MCFC inews.co.uk/sport/footballโฆ

How did Dominic Calvert-Lewin's 'hairpull' on Marc Cucurella differ from the incident that led to Lisandro Martinez being shown a red card?
Analysis from former Premier League referee Graham Scott (@Refsplaining):
The last thing that VAR Paul Howard would have wanted in the FA Cup semi-final between Chelsea and Leeds United was a hair-pulling incident.
Dominic Calvert-Lewinโs contact on Marc Cucurella was fleeting and surely fell short of the level of contact required for a red card.
But Manchester United, who saw their defender Lisandro Martinez sent off for briefly tugging Calvert-Lewinโs hair on 13 April, will undoubtedly see enough similarities to ask questions of PGMO, and they have my sympathy.
When Leeds and Chelsea met in the 1970 cup final, there were multiple brutal tackles, a punch-up and retaliatory stamp by one player on another. None was deemed worthy of a yellow card, let alone a red.
Now we find ourselves debating whether a player should be dismissed and banned for three matches for a fleeting tug on an opponentโs hair. Progress? I donโt think so.

Itโs not embarrassing. Theyโve been to Wembley something like 33 times since Guardiola took over. Their fan base is predominantly a working class Manchester demographic. They donโt have endless pots of gold in their bank accounts. The issue is semi finals being played at Wembley
South Stand Pies@SouthStandPies
The most successful team in England in the last ten years and there were 10,000 empty Man City seats at Wembley. And thatโs after they gave some to Southampton! Embarrassing. #MNCSOT
