If you’ve been following our recent posts, you’ll know we have been highlighting the decision by the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police to refer newly graduated officers to Professional Standards for minor uniform breaches. Now, why are we posting this image? Because it was shared across the force’s own social media channels, showing the Chief Constable himself on camera with his trouser fly open and wearing a black jacket over his high-vis stab vest. The force’s Dress and Appearance Standards policy clearly states that high-vis must be the outer garment. So, did he refer himself to PSD? Probably not. Do we believe he should be investigated for breaching uniform standards? No. But it does highlight what happens when you use a sledgehammer to crack a nut. All eyes are on you. Every move you make is watched closely, especially by those you lead. Leadership is about consistency, fairness, and setting the right example from the top. This is the last we will say on the matter for now until we have heard back from the organisations where we have raised concerns. We will keep you all updated.
