@WoodsMischa hi Mischa! you are right that the talk is not online, and it's the first time i have given it, send me an email if you want the slides

@AC_Doherty Looks interesting. Am I correct in assuming the talks are not online (or that you have not given the talk online somewhere)?

Come work with us! We have a level B/C continuing position in theoretical quantum Physics at the university of Sydney. (position roughly equivalent to tenure track in North America, but you get to live in Sydney!) usyd.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/USYD_EXTERNAL_…

@clarejtbirch never do this unless you are on a US domestic flight with too much carry on

@meQuanics maybe we should discuss: they describe a Mach-Zehnder so a 2-2 optical switch, I put the photon in and get it out in one of 2 places depending on V, there may be some dependence of loss on which output I get but that should be a small effect

@AC_Doherty So, you think it means an extra 100mdB of loss when the voltage to the modulator is applied .vs. when it isn't applied? I'm assuming the BTO modulator isn't an integrated package (i.e. with source and detector on the same chip as with the thermal modulator) ?

Congrats to @psiquantum! I am biased but this is very exciting to me. Particularly the "next generation technologies" for sources, switches, delays, detectors, and fiber-to-chip coupling. Photonic quantum computing still in the race! arxiv.org/abs/2404.17570

Do you know about the fascinating mathematical ideas behind post-quantum cryptography? I wrote about how Australia should be training more people with deep mathematical skills for PQC: Mind-bending maths could stop quantum hackers, but few understand it theconversation.com/mind-bending-m…

@meQuanics typical definition of insertion loss would include getting into and out of the device, so i would assume that is included, however note that this is on chip so losses like getting on and off the chip should not be included, should be loss with switch as opposed to without

@AC_Doherty Do you know what they mean by “insertion loss” here? My reading is that it’s a BTO covered waveguide over 2mm with a 56dB/m loss rate. Why is it an “insertion loss” rather than just waveguide loss under the modulator section?

Curious what sets the scale of the height of the highest mountains. What’s the deepest explanation for why it’s ~10km on Earth, not 1 or 100 etc. Can it be deduced from radius and density and not much else? Does it then work for the moon, Mars and so on?

In fault-tolerant quantum computers, physical circuits implement encoded logical operations. Typically, the bulk of these physical circuits are syndrome extraction circuits, such as this one for the surface code. This makes them a key target for noise characterisation!
