The Indian Head Penny, designed by James B. Longacre from the U.S. Mint, features a left-facing Liberty wearing a Native American headdress with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the rim on the obverse. Throughout its mintage, the reverse had two different designs. In 1859 mintages, the reverse has a simple laurel wreath surrounding “ONE CENT.” From 1860-1909, a redesigned oak wreath with a shield above it, symbolizing national unity, appears on the reverse. #apmex #headsortails #penny #cent #numismatics #coins #coincollecting

In this Knowledge Center article, we explain whether gold-filled jewelry can be sold and why it is valued differently than solid gold pieces. We break down what “gold-filled” means, how its bonded gold layer compares to gold plating, and why the actual gold content is often too small for many buyers to process individually. The article also explores alternative options, such as selling wearable pieces as vintage jewelry or accumulating larger quantities for specialized refiners. Understanding the difference between solid gold, gold-filled, and gold-plated items can help sellers set realistic expectations and choose the best path forward. What is a coin denomination? The denomination of a coin is the face value assigned to it, indicating how much the coin is worth as currency. Some coins have denominations that are far lower than the value of the metal they contain, which is why many historic gold and silver coins are worth much more than their original face value. Why does a coin have a rim? The rim of a coin is the raised border that runs along the outer edge on the front and back, helping protect the design from wear. Because the rim is slightly higher than the rest of the coin, it acts like a built-in shield that helps the details stay visible longer in circulation. We break down what gold flakes are, how buyers evaluate their weight and estimated purity, and why impurities and mixed minerals often lead to discounted offers. The article also outlines common selling options, including local gold buyers, specialist natural gold dealers, and precious metal refiners that handle placer gold. By understanding how raw gold is tested, priced, and prepared for sale, sellers can approach the process with realistic expectations and greater confidence. What is a mint mark? The mint mark is a small letter or symbol on a coin that indicates which mint facility produced it. In some years, coins from one mint can be far scarcer than the same coin from another mint, making the tiny mint mark a big factor in a coin’s value.
