The Indian Head Penny, designed by James B. Longacre from the U.S. Mint, features a left-facing Liberty wearing a Native American headdress with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around the rim on the obverse.
Throughout its mintage, the reverse had two different designs. In 1859 mintages, the reverse has a simple laurel wreath surrounding “ONE CENT.” From 1860-1909, a redesigned oak wreath with a shield above it, symbolizing national unity, appears on the reverse.
