A lot of Indian politics becomes easier to understand once you stop asking what policy will improve productivity and instead start asking which group gets visible recognition. The state often behaves less like a development machine and more like a giant symbolic compensation engine, because that's what the political incentives align towards.

GST collections rose almost 14 percent in June even as the RBI was busy cutting its growth forecast, which tells you the state's ability to extract has decoupled from the economy's ability to expand. Formalisation was sold as a rising tide that would eventually reach everyone. What it has reliably delivered so far is a tax net that tightens faster than incomes rise. A slowing economy that still hands the treasury double-digit revenue growth is the system working exactly as designed.

India’s elite talks about AI replacing jobs before India has even created enough normal jobs worth replacing. A huge part of the country is still stuck between exam prep, family business, low-end service work, sarkari hope and migration dreams. The future arrived before the present was built properly and our dehati boomer leadership has no contingency plan on how to stave off this crisis.

Every time India discovers a new sector, the same cycle begins. First we ignore it, then mock it, then tax it, then overregulate it, then announce a mission, then wonder why the best founders incorporated in Singapore, Dubai or Delaware.

#WATCH | Delhi | Animal rights activist & BJP leader Maneka Gandhi says, “Back in 1972, when Indira Gandhi was in power, India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act, a pioneering piece of legislation that was highly acclaimed worldwide. There were Jain monks, specifically the Digambara sect, who exerted significant pressure regarding this issue. These monks carry a specific type of broom-like whisk called a Pichhi tucked at their waist as they walk; it is crafted from peacock feathers. They urged that the ban should not apply to these feathers. Indira Gandhi agreed, and consequently, this became the only type of feather legally permitted for sale in India. Now, the thing is, these feathers do not simply drop on their own; a peacock sheds only one feather a month… Once the door was opened and the ban was lifted, a massive industry emerged. Because the feathers are so beautiful, everyone got involved... People started displaying feathers in their homes instead of flowers. The reality is that these feathers are now obtained almost exclusively by killing the peacocks… Back in 2001, I presented all this evidence to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and suggested we introduce an amendment to ban these feathers. He agreed, and the amendment was drafted and taken to Parliament. However, the Jain community exerted immense pressure from high levels, insisting that this could not happen. I was forced to withdraw the drafted amendment, and the matter was dropped. Now, my point is not that the Digambar Jains killed the birds, but rather that they opened the door; and once that door is opened, who knows what or who might walk through it?”

Funny thing is that this isn't even an attack at all, this is just a factual description of reality. The way things have been lately, truth isn't acceptable to us. As Nietzsche said, we deny extraordinary qualities in others because it serves as a reminder of our own mediocrity.

@ArunKrishnan_ I don't see her as attacking India. She is just noting the truth of the matter. America is extraordinary here they will let people with foreign accents and first Gen immigrants assume CEO role of their most iconic corporations. Doesn't happen anywhere in the world.

India can certainly be an enjoyable experience but the key part is always having the option to leave. Otherwise it is nightmarish. Same way falling out of sky can be recreational or a tragedy depending on whether you have a parachute or not. All politicians and dhandhos have it.

There is really no beauty to be found in chaos. What foreigners end up liking is the feeling of Novelty and surprise that this all still works despite the level of apparent dysfunction. The key here is that they leave after a few days before this chaos becomes overwhelming.

After seeing the laughable arguments of people supporting telegram ban, u realize how easy it must have been for past masters to govern us. People estranged from liberty will always trade it away. It may take another 75 yrs for us to grasp these concepts. Until then we are not a free people, only the names of our masters will change every 5 yrs.

Look at the reactions to this post to see how Hindutva’s cultural ecosystem has damaged their followers brains. They cannot comprehend that a former Army Chief can think & talk in a different way from the cartoon caricature they have been trained to expect from movies and TV news

Ex-Army Chief Gen. Naravane on why he doesn't watch Bollywood war movies "These movies don't show you the truth. War is a bloody game. They romanticise things which gives people the wrong idea that war is a normal thing..But declaring war should be our last resort"

Those who lack individual accomplishments cope with collective ones, those who lack present accomplishments cope with past ones and those who have no real accomplishments cope with imagined ones. In india, you have a combination of all 3 of these things.
