India just got tariffs slashed from 50% to 18% and gave up almost nothing to get there. The headline says India agreed to reduce tariffs on the US to zero and stop buying Russian oil. Both claims deserve scrutiny. Start with Russian oil. India was importing 1.8 million barrels per day of Russian crude at peak. By January that was already down to 1.2 million bpd. Projections had it falling to 800,000 bpd in March because the discount on Russian crude collapsed from $23/barrel to $5-6/barrel once sanctions tightened and shadow fleet crackdowns hit. At those spreads, the savings that justified the geopolitical risk evaporated. India “agreed” to do what market conditions were already forcing. And the replacement? The US is now pitching India on Venezuelan crude. Washington went from sanctioning countries that buy Venezuelan oil to routing it through India as a substitute. That tells you who needed this deal more than the headline suggests. Now the tariff math. The tweet’s framing says “25% to 18%.” The actual number is 50% to 18%. India was facing a 25% reciprocal tariff plus a separate 25% punitive tariff over Russian oil purchases. Both are now collapsed into a single 18% rate. That’s a 64% reduction in the total tariff burden. The “zero tariffs on US goods” claim has no detail, no timeline, and no signed text. The deal hasn’t been posted to the Federal Register. Legal experts are questioning whether it’s even binding without congressional approval. Meanwhile, look at the sequencing. Six days ago India signed the EU-India FTA, a free trade zone of 2 billion people and $27 trillion in GDP. That deal eliminates or reduces tariffs on 96.6% of EU goods into India and gives Indian textiles, leather, gems, and pharma full EU market access, the exact sectors getting crushed by US tariffs. One week ago India had zero major FTAs with Western powers. Today it has preferential access to both the US and the EU while China sits at 145% US tariffs with no EU deal. The country everyone treats as a junior negotiating partner keeps ending up with the best terms in the room.
