The Prince of Egypt (1998) is animation operating at operatic scale. DreamWorks at peak ambition. The plagues sequence alone justifies the medium’s existence. Hans Zimmer + Stephen Schwartz craft scripture into cinema. Transcendent.

Did you know Éowyn’s ‘Lament for Théodred’ was performed in Old English?
Miranda Otto, who played Éowyn, performed the entire lament live on set, with no studio recording or playback. The scene was filmed in cold conditions, making her breath visible, her eyes naturally tearful, and in several takes she sings while actually crying, giving the scene raw emotional power.
This scene appears in the Extended Edition of the film; it was cut from the theatrical release to maintain pacing and runtime. The extended version shows Théodred’s funeral outside Edoras and Éowyn performing the lament, highlighting the grief and cultural depth of Rohan.
Éowyn’s “Lament for Théodred” is one of the most emotional moments in Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers. The lyrics were written by Philippa Boyens and translated into Old English by linguist David Salo, reflecting Tolkien’s inspiration from Anglo-Saxon culture for the Rohirrim.
