Alberta’s pharmacists play an important role in health care delivery in Alberta. They provide Albertans with additional access to important primary care services, especially in rural and remote areas. However, this year’s publicly funded pharmacy costs are forecast to exceed the agreed upon spending cap of $670 million.  We will be introducing several cost saving measures through a Ministerial Order to reduce pharmacy fees for select clinical pharmacy services, specifically care plans and follow-ups. It is important to note that fees for filling prescriptions will not be reduced. Through these changes, the goal is to bring Alberta in line with other jurisdictions who deliver these services across Canada to ensure these services remain accessible and sustainable. Please see the letter I have shared with the pharmacists association to all pharmacists that further outlines this decision.
