@czapary I will say though this isnt a DC silo issue. Raleigh was down to 40 vacancies a year and a half ago and is now back up to 155. A lot of people are choosing to come get trained at a lot of big cities then leave to go work at a department and make $10k more with less work

Unfortunately, our current approach to hiring and retaining officers isn’t working. Reaching 4,000 would take at least a decade under ideal conditions.
The next Mayor needs to be in the weeds on retention and efficiency: modern scheduling systems, real-time manpower analysis…

An important budgetary point on police hiring is we spent 5X the police overtime budget last year, $120 million more, because of understaffing. Hiring more officers would help relieve pressure on overtime.

We have the most recreational centers of any major city per capita, we have tons of attractions to do, yet teenagers still come out en masse to sow chaos.
