Cardinal Stephen Brislin has called on South Africans celebrating their Freedom Day to be mindful of those who continue to live without true freedom.
Freedom Day in South Africa, observed every 27 April, marks the country’s transition from apartheid and white minority rule to a democratic society. It commemorates the historic 1994 elections, when all citizens, regardless of race, were able to vote for the first time.
In his message on the important celebration, Cardinal Brislin underscored the importance of freedom and expressed gratitude to God for the freedom South Africa is currently experiencing, especially the freedom of religion.
“We can never be truly free when other people are not free, and so while we rejoice in our freedom, we've also got to be in solidarity with those people who do not have the freedom that we enjoy,” Cardinal Brislin said in a Monday, April 27 interview, which was published by the publication of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC).
Cardinal Brislin who is also the president of the SACBC further reflected on the country’s past, urging citizens not to forget the painful history from which they have emerged.
“Let us not forget where we came from. While we have many problems, challenges in our country, evil things that are happening, we have come from a dreadful system of racism, of apartheid, of the really dehumanization of people, and we are a free country,” he said.
The Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg noted that South Africans currently enjoy fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech and association, and emphasized that these gains should not be taken for granted.
“We have freedom of speech, we have freedom of association, I would say we are the freest country in Africa, and let us never forget that, and then we can face the problems that you have mentioned, like corruption and xenophobia,” he said.
The 69-year-old Archbishop highlighted some of the challenges South Africans are facing, such as corruption, xenophobia, and violence, calling for peace and unity among all citizens, which is the foundation for lasting freedom.
Xenophobia in South Africa remains a persistent problem marked by hostility, intimidation, and at times violence against foreign nationals, particularly African migrants.
Migrants are sometimes targeted by vigilante groups who accuse them of being in the country illegally, publicly confront them, and even attack them or demand proof of documentation.
Some groups have reportedly blamed foreigners for unemployment, crime, and limited access to services.
“Let us work together so that we can be truly free, not subject to the violence that we experience on our streets, not subject to the terrible corruption that deprives people of a future, deprives people of hospital care, of housing, and so on. These things are limiting our freedom, so we pray we work together to really throw off those shackles of things like corruption, greed, and xenophobia,” he said.
The Cardinal encouraged South Africans to unite and build cohesion among all the citizens of their country, noting that the nation is still divided.
“We've got to find ways of really unifying and becoming South African,” Cardinal Brislin said.
