Watch the precise wording. Trump is denying a "payment."
The deal, per Iran's own IRGC, involves unfreezing up to $24 billion in long-frozen Iranian assets.
Those are two different things, and the gap between them is where both sides get to tell opposite stories.
Unfreezing Iran's own money isn't technically the U.S. "paying" Iran.
Trump can truthfully say no American taxpayer dollars are being handed over.
At the same time, Iran can truthfully tell its people billions in assets are being released.
Payment versus unfreezing.
Same transaction, two honest-sounding descriptions, aimed at two opposing domestic audiences.
The agreement works precisely because it lets Washington and Tehran describe it in incompatible terms.
