UNCLE RAY MINNIECON - HIS SERVICE, MEDALS AND STATEMENTS Pastor and Elder Uncle Ray Minniecon is an Australian Defence Force (ADF) veteran who served for two years as a driver in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF), specifically with the 51st Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment. He comes from a family with a strong history of service, including his grandfather and brothers. UNCLE RAY’S SERVICE: Military Service: Served for two years in the CMF (Army Reserve). FAMILY SERVICE: Grandfather: Private James Lingwoodock, served in the 11th Light Horse Brigade during World War I. Brothers: Sonny and Phillip Minniecon, served in Vietnam. RECOGNITION AND ACTIVISM: Uncle Ray has been a vocal advocate for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans who were historically denied respect and benefits, such as fair pay and access to RSL clubs. RECENT CONTROVERSY: Recently, Uncle Ray was involved in a widely reported incident where he was heckled during an Acknowledgement of Country at the 2026 Sydney Anzac Day Dawn Service, despite his status as a veteran and his family's deep connection to the Anzac story. EXCERPTS FROM UNCLE RAY’S SPEECH: "Just to stand strong, stand tall. Know who we are, where we come from, and that this is Aboriginal land. Always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We stand on the truth, and truth can't be shaken. That kind of truth will never be destroyed". "It wasn't their war. It wasn't our war. But they were willing to volunteer and sacrifice their lives—for you, for this country". UNCLE RAY’S MEDAL(S): Uncle Ray was awarded the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in October 2022. The medal was presented to Pastor Minniecon on October 11, 2022, near the Scarred Tree at St. John's Church in Glebe, in recognition of his profound leadership and work bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. NOTE: While often seen participating in commemorations wearing medals, Uncle Ray is frequently wearing his family’s historical service medals (such as those of his uncle who served in WWI) to honour their service. MEDAL PLACEMENT: In Australia, medals earned by the recipient are worn on the left side of the chest, directly over the heart, arranged horizontally in a consistent line. Medals of ancestors or relatives (next-of-kin) are worn on the right side of the chest to show they are not the original recipient. SUMMARY: Uncle Ray appears to have missed the memo regarding medal placement. Uncle Ray needs to acknowledge that approximately 101,000 NON-Indigenous Australian soldiers died during the two World Wars (compared to 250–300 indigenous soldiers) and they weren’t fighting for ‘Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land’ Uncle Ray needs to understand that frustrations weren’t directed at him or indigenous people personally, but at the excessive overuse of ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremonies, that has devalued them in a short space of time (since they became standard practice in 2008). Less frequent ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremonies, used at appropriate times would make them more significant and meaningful. abc.net.au/news/2026-04-2…

If we know the Welcome to Country is a made-up ceremony, why are e doing it?
