After realizing that previous sickle cell studies were done primarily in European populations, Ferguson went on to set guidelines for diagnosing sickle cell in children under 12 years of age and would study the development of sickle cell in African American infants.

Dr. Angela Dorothea Ferguson is best known for her research in sickle cell and its prevalence in African American populations. At Howard's School of Medicine, she began her research in sickle cell and recognized the disproportionate effect it had on Black children.

Dr. Jane C. Wright was a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon who's research focused on the development of chemotherapies. Dr. Wright graduated with honors from New York Medical College in 1945 and would go on to join her father, Dr. Louis Wright, in researching anti-cancer
