Its good to know that whatever you are doing right now, people 20 years from today will think is cool by default. Even if it is rather mundane. Right now the sort of "compressed past" is what is in vogue, low quality internet uploads, it draws out a sense of obscurity when viewed. When combined with modern optimizations of triggering a certain "cool" effect when someone looks at a profile e.g., all lower case names, minimal personal information, shortened bios, subtle profile picture, blank profile picture, trying hard to look like you aren't trying hard. You can see a certain combination appear that has a lot of potential if it is backed up with actual merit and knowledge of what is currently seen as cool. There are sort of different strands of visual aesthetics people appeal to depending on their areas of interest and the cluster they associate with, but the effect is similar regardless of the paintjob, and currently id say it's easiest to bracket this general aesthetic as "compressed" while the sort of prior Y2K/2000's appeal is drifting away and the recreations start to seem kitsch in comparison to this new thing. The idea of optimizing for ones aura only really works if you have the requirements to back it up, it comes off poorly if one just optimizes for it but doesn't have the juice. Via natural human psychology however, if one has the juice and optimizes for it, it does trigger an effect even if it is a put-on. It is interesting to think about what sort of things will be appealing now to those in the future, Brian Eno's quote about the sort of things people latch on to typically being the sort of imperfections of a period (vhs tape aesthetics as easy example) is very true.

@BaseSk8er Sorry for Necroposting, but do you know which versions of VLC still support the ASCII output? It sounds fun as hell, but (as you said) mine keeps spazzing out.

Also some funny shit i learned while working on this new vid for a bit in it, It turns out VLC has a antiquated option to display video in ascii format, but that shit is completely broken in newer builds and just makes the player spaz out, but the older versions it works fine
