I recently exchanged words with a prominent tech leader (you’d know him) who was bearish on the U.S. despite the election results. His forecast didn’t convince me, so I remain confident that we’re charting our own path toward a new chapter of great meaning and progress. While it may seem gloomy to many right now, breakthrough moments often emerge from periods of apparent darkness, much like Samuel Eliot Morison's description of 1492 at the beginning of his Columbus Biography, Admiral of the Ocean Sea: "At the end of the year 1492 most men in Western Europe felt exceedingly gloomy about the future. Christian civilization appeared to be shrinking in area and dividing into hostile units as its sphere contracted. For over a century there had been no important advance in natural science, and registration in the universities dwindled as the instruction they offered became increasingly jejune and lifeless. Institutions were decaying, well-meaning people were growing cynical or desperate, and many intelligent men, for want of something better to do, were endeavoring to escape the present through studying the pagan past." Good times await us -- take a step back and remember to never go full beartard!
