It was beliefs and ideology that challenges the American empire. The empire does not care what you believe. It only cares whether you comply and submit. Saudi Arabia - an absolutist monarchy with a stricter Shariah codex - ranks among the lowest globally on freedom and sits near the bottom of democracy indices, even lower than Iran. The UAE is a closed authoritarian system with virtually no political rights. And yet, they are 'strategic partners.' So the pattern is not about religion per se. Not about democracy at all. Not about rights in any case. It is about alignment with American interests. The most consistent feature of the American empire is a system that accommodates repression, monarchy, and absolutism… as long as they remain subordinate. And punishes any state regardless of ideology that dares to stand outside its architecture of control.
