If I were to do a top ten of the best JLR products on sale right now it would probably be the Defender Octa 1 to 9 and a Range Rover in 10th. So surprised to see over 40 new Octas available on Autotrader. But then SV brand remains confused to customers, and what the hell is an Octa anyway. Keep calling all the JLR offshoots SVRs and maybe people will get it?

@PookyD81 A brief spirited drive down a country road in an R5 was enough to put me off owning one because of the weird disconnected steering, I wouldn’t pay extra for more of the same

Over 2800 miles in the A290 now and I can’t look past the car’s biggest disappointment: the steering just isn’t good enough. Two real issues here, 1. the torque steer is just stupid (and even R5 owners comment on this), 2. it’s elastic and disconnected, lacks any precision and doesn’t encourage you to chuck it into a corner.
Of course I’ve set about trying to find out why so I can go on and fix it, but it’s a bit of a task.
Four things are working against it here, 1. The front axle is set with a lot of toe-out (Alpine WHY do you keep doing this!), 2. the wheels are simply offset outboard to get a wider track, 3, the front lower arms and bushes are made of cheese and 4, the driveshafts aren’t the same length (now come on Renault, we stopped doing this over 20 years ago).
Alpine have invested money in some places, and then not at all in others. The A290 has a complete bespoke aluminium front subframe. I mean it looks nice and saves a few kilos. The front uprights are also bespoke, mainly to mount the brakes. But the rest of it is just R5, and it’s worth noting these are carry over from the Captur and Megane.
Wheel offset I can’t do much about, and definitely not going to fix one driveshaft being 90mm longer than the other. But geometry settings are helping and it just leaves the front lower arms. It needs a nice, bespoke aluminum arm that is stiff in the right places and has better bushes. Going to have to work out if this is worth the investment.

@ChrisO_wiki Following along from the UK and its hard to see past the caricature but a 2 horse race is not a good choice. When I’ve queried my english brother who’s American family voted Trump this is his response. Is any of this vaguely true?

English

This is quite true. The other thing that's going to be asked over and over for the next four years is, "He can't do that, can he?"

For those of you asking, I think the BBC sums it up pretty well…
